Vote Compass – electoral literacy tool

In the run-up to Australia’s federal parliamentary elections on Sat 7 Sep 2013, the ABC, the University of Melbourne and University of Sydney have launched ‘Vote Compass‘, which is an interactive electoral literacy application developed by a global non-profit network of political scientists.  The objective of Vote Compass is to promote democratic engagement during election campaigns.

Political scientists have used this tool to evaluate voter positions and priorities against political party positions in the last three Canadian national elections and the 2012 U.S. Presidential election.  It has yielded some interesting results, including that party policy is not the sole determinant of how people vote.

Vote Compass comprises a series of survey questions, which you can weight, that enables you to determine how your personal policy positions and priorities align with those of the major political parties.  Vote Compass is not a ‘how to vote’ guide.
